Training sessions for nurses on the diagnosis and treatment of acute malnutrition were held in Basse (Gambia) on 5, 6 and 7 June. They were organised by Nutrition without Borders, the Gambian Ministry of Health and the National Nutrition Agency (NaNa), with the support of the Government of the Canary Islands. The sessions, which were attended by a total of 29 participants from the 24 rural centres of the Upper River Region (URR), served to continue training healthcare personnel in the treatment of malnutrition.
Given the positive response to the initiative, we hope to continue strengthening the training of local health personnel, many of whom are women, which will allow us to improve care both at the CREN in Basse and throughout the region
Due to the increase in malnutrition, training has been promoted to ensure that cases of malnutrition can be successfully managed, especially in the outpatient setting in communities where complications can be prevented and more intensive management can be avoided.
Nursing assistants from the Basse CREN - Fatou Manneh, Omar Bah, Meta Bah and Alhagie Kebbeh - as well as nurse Lamin Kebbeh, among others, received the diploma certifying that they have completed the training. This is a programme that will strengthen the community care process that ensures the prevention of malnutrition.
