Recently, the Basse Nutrition and Health Center (CREN) acquired a new vehicle, which has been operational and supporting the center's activities for several days.
This new acquisition represents a significant improvement to the CREN's daily operations, facilitating both clinical care and preventative work in the field. Specifically, the vehicle will allow for the strengthening and expansion of nutritional screenings, a key tool for the early detection of childhood malnutrition. Thanks to this increased mobility, the team will be able to reach more communities, provide more continuous monitoring of children at risk, and act more quickly and effectively.
Furthermore, an epidemiological study will begin in the Upper River Region in the coming days. This initiative is crucial for gaining a deeper understanding of the nutritional status of children between 6 and 59 months of age and its impact on their growth. This study, which will be conducted throughout 2026, was prepared during 2025 through extensive work on methodological design, indicator definition, and training of the research team, thus ensuring the quality and reliability of the data collected.
In this context, the new vehicle becomes an essential tool, as it will facilitate fieldwork for Dr. Gloria González and nutritionist Andrea Hormiga, allowing them to access the different communities in the region more quickly, safely, and efficiently.
This study, which has the support of the Gambian health authorities and has been approved by the MRC Joint Ethics Committee, will establish a solid foundation to guide future interventions and contribute to improving the situation of child malnutrition in the area.
Overall, the addition of the vehicle not only optimizes the project's logistics, but also clearly reinforces CREN's capacity to have an impact, both in early detection and in generating knowledge and implementing effective solutions for children's nutritional health.
