In the URR region of The Gambia, Nutrition Without Borders has developed a project to strengthen the capacity of mothers in the detection and prevention of child malnutrition using the Mid-Arm Circumference Measurement (MUAC) tape. With the support of the Federación Canaria de Municipios (FECAM) and the Basse Regional Health Directorate, 245 mothers from 56 communities have been trained to identify and refer children at risk to nutritional recovery centers.

The MUAC Mothers groups have established a community network that facilitates early detection and monitoring of cases, in addition to training other mothers to perform measurements in their homes. They also carry out home visits to monitor the child's recovery and avoid abandoning treatment.

Training sessions included topics on nutrition, use of the MUAC tape, and validation of collected data. As a result, high participation and the creation of a sustainable community surveillance system have been achieved.

The structure of the training was as follows:
08:30 – 09:00 | Register | Facilitators |
09:00 – 10:00 | Welcome and opening words | RHD staff and local authorities |
10:15 – 10:30 | Presentation of the participants | Participants |
10:30 – 10:45 | Concept of the Baby Friendly community initiative | Facilitators (CHN) |
