CREN de Soma dynamic space for nutritional health and food sovereignty, Republic of The Gambia.
The data for the year 2022 in the CREN of Soma showed an increase in the impact of child malnutrition, which made us see the need for action in the Lower River Region. That is why, within the framework of this project, the CREN has been prepared to be able to effectively care for all malnourished boys and girls in the area. In addition, the training and awareness campaign aimed at mothers has been reinforced.
Being able to train mothers is a particularly important element in combating child malnutrition. That is why during the project we have taken advantage of the posters already created and used in Basse in 2022 and have printed them and hung them in the CREN of Soma. Besides, this has been accompanied by an entire awareness-raising process by the CREN medical staff, who have been responsible for giving the posters the importance they deserve as a transformative element for good habits for mothers.

Strengthen training for diagnosis and treatment of CREN personnel, health workers and community health agents
The Global Crisis of 2022 has led to high price inflation and an increase in food vulnerability in communities, with high rates of anemia and malnutrition also in the adult population.
The situation of increasing malnutrition that The Gambia is experiencing in 2022, and the fact that the Gambian government does not have the F75 and F100 food supplement distributed by UNICEF, has led to generating a situation in which it is necessary to find alternatives to reverse the significant deficits in Nutritional Food Security (SAN).
The nurse Ismaila Dem of the CREN of Soma and local coordinator of Nutrition without Borders has been in charge of energizing prevention tasks. In addition, we have worked together to implement proposals that may be alternatives to the lack of resources from the Gambian Ministry of Health or the National Nutrition Agency.
Coinciding with the end of the harvest season, there is still food, but in the coming months the situation in the communities will worsen. For this reason, in the fourth quarter, a training task has been carried out for the CREN team to activate its capacity to raise awareness among the communities while the local product has been produced, reinforcing the sovereignty of the communities.

Promotion of food security and circular economy for the maternal and child population through the promotion and support of 12 community gardens in the Soma region.
In The Gambia, the COVID-19 pandemic caused an increase in malnutrition in rural areas, exacerbated by inflation after border closures, such that the CRENs recorded an increase in admissions for children under 5 years of age. In response, this project has been created with the objective of improving maternal and child feeding and nutrition in 12 communities in the Lower River Region. This has been possible through training in the cultivation of nutrient-rich foods in community gardens in selected rural communities.
By supporting women who manage community gardens, promoting food security and the circular economy, it has been possible to improve the level of community food production and food security of the maternal and child population.
As can be seen in the photograph below, the field is managed mainly by women who received the materials donated by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria with the director of Nutrition Without Borders Núria Camps present in June 2021.
